چکیده

The health status of goshawk chicks (Accipiter gentilis) from the nests in the vicinity of Wrocław was evaluated. The research was conducted in spring 2001. Each nest was inspected three times at different phases of the reproduction period and the protocol included: the counting of eggs in each nest, clinical examination of chicks, collecting swabs from the crop and cloaca, blood and litter samples for bacteriological, mycological and parasitological examinations. The total of 40 eggs, from which 33 chicks hatched, were found in 11 nests. The number of birds that survived until day 35-40 was 28. E.coli (87% and 100% during the first and third inspection, respectively), Staphylococcus spp. (38.7% and 51.8%, respectively) and Candida spp. (22.5% and 18.5%, respectively) were most frequently isolated micro-organisms from faecal swabs. Candida spp. were also identified from the crop and during the third visit the frequency of isolation was significantly higher and reached 63%.The presence of Trichomonas gallinae was recorded and confirmed in the second visit in 35% of the chicks whilst in the third examination Trichomonas were found in all chicks. The second inspection showed the ectoparasite Carnus hemapterus on the nestlings in 5 nests and Leucocytozoon spp. in the blood of 53.6% of the chicks. Fungi such as Candida spp., Aspergillus spp., Penicillium spp. and Geotrichum spp. were isolated from litter samples. No Salmonella spp. was isolated from faecal swabs or litter samples.

How, and Why, Is the Goshawk (accipiter Gentilis) Affected by Modern Forest Management in Fennoscandia?

-•The Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) is a common raptor in the boreal forest of Fennoscandia (Norway, Sweden and Finland), with a present breeding density of about 3 pr/100 km 2 of forest area. Several independent studies show that goshawk populations in Fennoscandia have declined by 50-60% from the 1950s to the 1980s. This decline coincides in time with an intensification of forest mana...

Evaluation of Trail-Cameras for Analyzing the Diet of Nesting Raptors Using the Northern Goshawk as a Model

Diet studies present numerous methodological challenges. We evaluated the usefulness of commercially available trail-cameras for analyzing the diet of Northern Goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) as a model for nesting raptors during the period 2007-2011. We compared diet estimates obtained by direct camera monitoring of 80 nests with four indirect analyses of prey remains collected from the nests an...

Diet, Prey Delivery Rates, and Prey Biomass of Northern Goshawks in East-central Arizona

Recent concern over persistence of Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) populations in Arizona has stemmed from two long-term demography studies that report substantial yearly fl uctuations in productivity and evidence of a declining population. Although many factors could be involved in changes in productivity and population declines, availability of food is one such factor. As part of a demo...

Predation as a landscape effect: the trading off by prey species between predation risks and protection benefits.

1. Predators impose costs on their prey but may also provide benefits such as protection against other (e.g. nest) predators. The optimal breeding location in relation to the distance from a nesting raptor varies so as to minimize the sum of costs of adult and nest predation. We provide a conceptual model to account for variation in the relative predation risks and derive qualitative prediction...

Predicting nesting habitat of Northern Goshawks in mixed aspen-lodgepole pine forests in a high-elevation shrub-steppe dominated landscape

We developed a habitat suitability model for predicting nest locations of breeding Northern Goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) in the high-elevation mixed forest and shrub-steppe habitat of south-central Idaho, USA. We used elevation, slope, aspect, ruggedness, distance-to-water, canopy cover, and individual bands of Landsat imagery as predictors for known nest locations with logistic regression. We...
